As Ingrid says on "Building Boston's Families", the key to strong family relationships is a genuine relationship with God Himself. Without this all important relationship in place, it is much harder to put into practice the principles and practices given on the show. Knowing God in a real way starts with the grace of Jesus Christ.
Our heart is to get the message of God's grace out to as many people as possible, and to help them actually receive the grace of Jesus Christ into their lives. Grace means that God does something for you rather than you trying to do something for Him, like being good and keeping His commandments. The fact is we all fail at being good and keeping God's commandments in many ways. This creates a debt that we owe God, but are unable to pay. God's standard is perfection, and none of us attain that goal. Deep down we all know this to be true.
So Jesus came to pay our debt. Our number one need is forgiveness from God, and that comes as a gift by asking for it. You cannot earn it. God actually loves you very much and wants to forgive you. He chooses to forgive us because Jesus paid the debt we owe by bearing it on the Cross where He died for our sins. He is waiting for you to stop trying to get to Him by your own efforts and to start trusting that Jesus has done everything necessary to bring you to God.
When you realize that you are sinful and unable to pay God back, then you can turn to Jesus and receive His grace and help. He taught people to pray something like this: "Father, I am unworthy; please forgive me". You can ask God to forgive you today by coming to Him through Jesus who died on your behalf.
The second need we have is power to live a new way. That comes by grace as well. It comes by inviting Jesus into your life to take control and to make you a new person. He comes in by the asking, and His Spirit unites with your spirit to make you a new person. He changes the very thoughts and attitudes of your heart so that you change from the inside out. This gives you a brand new start in life, or what Jesus called being "born again".

In closing, the Bible says this: "This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins." (1 John 4:10) A relationship with God starts with realizing and receiving His love for you. God is your Father and He loves you more than anyone else in this world.
